About This Role:

The City of Unalaska is seeking candidates for the job of Lifeguard in the Department of Parks, Culture, and Recreation (Aquatics Center Division). Unalaska, Alaska, is a multicultural coastal hamlet of around 4,500 full-time residents in the central Aleutian Islands. It is home to the International Port of Dutch Harbor, the United States’ number one commercial fishing port.

Roles & Responsibilities For Part Time Lifeguard Opportunity in Unalaska:

  • Monitor the pool and aquatic areas to ensure the safety of all swimmers and guests.
  • Enforce pool rules and regulations to avoid accidents and ensure a safe atmosphere.
  • Provide rescue and first aid as necessary during crises or accidents.
  • Routinely inspect pool equipment and facilities for upkeep and safety.
  • Provide great customer service by assisting guests and responding to their concerns.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Basic knowledge and skills in lifeguarding procedures.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow verbal and written directions.
  • Ability to grasp swimming tactics.
  • Knowledge of or capacity to learn pool operations, as well as policies and procedures for the City of Unalaska’s Aquatics Centre.
  • Ability to enforce policies and regulations in a customer-service setting.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Ability to learn and apply fundamental pool chemistry operations.
  • Must have valid certificates or be able to get valid certifications in lifeguarding, first aid, CPR, Automated External Defibrillation (AED), and oxygen giver.
LICENCES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must have or be able to get an Alaska Driver’s License within 90 days of hire.
  • Must be legally allowed to work in the United States; if hired, must fill out an employment eligibility verification form (I9).
  • Ability to pass all mandatory pre-employment tests, including criminal background, reference, and history checks, as well as future random drug testing.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, with additional hours available during the week for various other programs.
  • Ability to operate indoors, in a pool area, with participants, and with the odor of chlorine and/or cleaning supplies
  • Maintain active and current certifications and licensing during the course of employment.
